The Book Thief is one of the most unique novels in contemporary literature. Its narrator is Death, who tells us the story of Liesel Meminger, a German girl in Nazi Germany.

Argument:

It is 1939. On the way to her new foster family in a suburb of Munich, nine-year-old Liesel witnesses something that will mark her forever: her little brother dies on the train and she steals her first book, The Gravedigger's Handbook, from the cemetery where he is buried.

Although she can't read, Liesel clings to that book as her only connection to the past. Her adoptive father, Hans Hubermann, a kind-hearted painter and accordionist, teaches her to read with patience and love. In this way, Liesel discovers the saving power of words and books.

But times are dark. The family is hiding Max Vandenburg, a young Jewish boy and the son of a soldier who saved Hans's life in World War I, in their basement. Liesel and Max forge a deep friendship, sharing words, stories, and a love of books.

Over the years, Liesel continues to steal books: from the coal heap where the Nazis burn what they consider "impure," from the mayor's wife's private library, from the floor, from wherever she can find them. Death, which follows her with a particular fascination, tells us her story: the story of the power of words, of friendship and loyalty amidst horror, and of the survival of a small corner of humanity in Nazi Germany.
